I live in Southern California, so tortillas are the carby equivalent of Mother's Milk down here. When the low-carb craze hit, everyone started calling them "wraps", which let's face it -- it's just a glorified tortilla. Maybe it made Arizona feel more comfortable. But I digress. What was I saying? Oh, I love tortillas.

On Weight Watchers, a large regular flour tortilla could set you back 4 to 7 Points a piece.  And I've found that many low-fat, low-carb, low-anything tortillas can taste gritty, waxy, gummy, have a funny smell or other unappetizing qualities.  Maybe that's how it's low fat... it gross, so you don't eat it.  Enter LaTortilla Factory

If you've been a Weight Watcher or just a health-conscious person in general, you've probably heard of our flattened friends before. Hungry Girl talks about them a lot and they've had very popular low carb tortillas out for a while now, though they seem to have rebranded all the healthy options under the newer "Smart & Delicious" umbrella.

I have to admit, I was never a fan. I didn't care for the texture.  I also tried some of their high fiber Softwraps (*cough*tortilla*cough*) in the "White" flavor, which I also wasn't a fan of. It had a funny smell and was kind of waxy (to me, someone else might love it).   Ok, I know I should be skipping the "white stuff" and going whole wheat, but seriously... whole wheat tortillas just kill it for me. It has to be a damn good wheat tortilla for me to not feel like I'm eating soggy sandpaper. I've yet to find one that passes the test of my stubborn San Diego mexican food palette.

At the store yesterday, I browsed the newer Smart & Delicious options (of which there are many now!) and found a Traditional (white), 100 Calorie, 98% Fat Free tortilla the size of my face and thought, let's give it one more go. I am SO glad I did!

Was it authentic like a señorita with a flower behind her ear patted out the masa herself on my patio so I could greet the warm Summer dawn with handmade tortillas full of love and guacamole?  Not even close.  But it was just as good as say, a full-calorie Mission tortilla of the same size.  Maybe better because while it was sturdy enough to hold my breakfast burrito, it wasn't as dense as a regular Mission tortilla. The texture was lighter.  It had only hints of the tell-tale signs of a low-something tortilla and they were easily overlooked once I stuffed it with my breakfast.

I've yet to try the Whole Wheat, but once these are gone, I promise to try them. If these Traditional variety are any indication, I'm hoping they will be just as delicious and sandpaper-free.  Good on ya, LaTortilla Factory!
